Flour, Eggs, and Zombies… What?

You read that right. FLOUR, EGGS, AND ZOMBIES. A phrase you probably never expected to hear, but here it is… the title of my latest book! So, what is Flour, Eggs, and Zombies? It’s a ‘cosy’ horror x climate fiction for adults and older teens, featuring Jude, a woman who’s lost everything, trying to cling to the little things that make life worth living… even in a zombie apocalypse.

So what is cosy horror?

Cosy horror is a subgenre of horror that blends scary or gory elements with humour, nostalgia, and warmth. It’s low stakes so that you’re not on the edge of your seat with worry, but you’re still enjoying the journey. And that’s exactly what you can expect in FEaZ. A year on from the The End, walking corpses are around every corner but Jude only has one thing on her mind… cake.

It’s the perfect subgenre to read sitting down by a window on a stormy night, wrapped up in a blanket, with a flickering candle by your side.

How does this combine with climate fiction?

Climate fiction is fairly self explanatory—it’s fiction that explores anthropogenic climate change and similar environmental issues. This probably sounds quite distant from a zombie story, but it evolved very naturally. As I explored the world in FEaZ it became clear very early on that while zombies are terrible for humans, they aren’t much of a threat to nature. In fact, in the absence of normal human activity (no cars, no oil mining, no AI, no people) nature was able to heal and things could start to thrive.

It’s something that really sticks with our ecologist, Jude, as she does her best to survive in a world that’s no longer made for her.

What’s FEaZ about?

‘There are a lot of things that you don’t have in a zombie apocalypse—consistent safety, hot showers, friends for the most part. Lately though, my mind has been on cake.’

On the cusp of her 30th birthday, all Jude can do is reminisce about the past. But this birthday won’t be like any of the others. With zombies around every corner, nature might be thriving, but human survival is almost impossible.

But that won’t stop Jude from completing her quest—to bake a cake.

All alone in the apocalypse, she has no one to watch her back, and certainly no one to help her celebrate her special day.

Who knew the struggle to find ingredients would be as hard as trying to survive?
